Improving maternal and newborn care

Our study examines effectiveness of mentors in capacity development for maternal and newborn care (MNC) in Nepal. Evidence from Africa indicates that clinical mentors are effective in improving the quality of care provided by rural health workers, as they can increase motivation, confidence and clinical skills. A few programs in Nepal have supported mentoring based capacity development that improves clinical skills for MNC. This operational research tests concurrent use of clinical and management mentors. By developing the capacities of clinical health workers in parallel with management staff through mentoring MNC will be improved.
